Music Releases 07-26-19
The groundbreaking band’s 10thstudio album, HOTEL LAST RESORT resides among Violent Femmes’ finest work, simultaneously refining and redefining their one-of-a-kind take on American music, mingling front porch folk, post-punk, spiritual jazz, country blues, avant garde improvisation, and golden age rock ‘n’ roll. Founded and fronted of course by Gano and Ritchie, the group remains as warm, wise and weird as ever before, with such new favorites as “Another Chorus” and “Everlasting You” continuing to mine the vast range of ideas, melodic complexity, and organic sonic craftsmanship that has characterized the band’s body of work since their landmark 1983 debut.
When I Get Home is the new album from Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter and visual artist Solange Knowles. This release represents the next phase in Solange's evolution as an artist, and is the follow up to her critically acclaimed 2016 album A Seat at the Table. The album is an exploration of origin. It asks the question how much of ourselves do we bring with us versus leave behind in our evolution. The artist returned to Third Ward Houston to answer this. When I Get Home was written, performed, and executive produced by Solange, and includes contributions from Tyler, the Creator, Chassol, Playboi Carti, Standing on the Corner, Panda Bear, Devin the Dude, The-Dream, and more. It also features samples from Third Ward's own Debbie Allen, Phylicia Rashad, poet Pat Parker, and Scarface.
You think you know the Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men, but you have no idea. Within the first minute of their new single 'Alligator' you'll be wondering if this huge anthem is the brainchild of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs fronting Arcade Fire –all thumping drums, brimming guitars and a call-to-arms chorus about taking control. During a day of final mixing at the LA studio of their co-producer Rich Costey (MUSE, Vampire Weekend, Chvrches), the five-piece gather in stages.

WINDOW ROCK is an album yearning to find meaning in a morally ambivalent world. Micah Nelson, who records under the name Particle Kid, seeks to achieve this goal via 9 new, kaleidoscopic tracks, exploring the mythology of the self, with verve, minimalism and simplicity.
Caamp formed when childhood friends Taylor Meier and Evan Westfall bonded over a shared love for Ohio and music. Their self-titled debut (2016) exceeded 52 million plays and climbed the Spotify charts. Thereafter, Caamp toured with Rainbow Kitten Surprise, headlined the US, released Boys EP (2K sold) and added a third member, Matt Vinson. The band has built their grassroots audience from touring all over the world and have sold 25K tickets over the past 8 months. In 2019 they will play worldwide festivals including Shaky Knees, The Great Escape, Outside Lands, Edmonton Folk Festival, Austin City Limits, and more. By & By was co-produced by Josh Block and Austin Jenkins (Leon Bridges, White Denim) at Ft. Worth’s Niles City Sound. The much-awaited album By and By includes key tracks "Penny Heads Up", "No Sleep", "By and By" and "Peach Fuzz”.

On February 17, 2013, Soundgarden concluded a sold-out U.S. Winter tour in support of King Animal, their first studio album in over sixteen years, with a special Live from the Artists Den taping at the Wiltern in Los Angeles. Soundgarden mixed new songs with classic radio hits and rarities performed live for the first time, in front of a rapturous crowd. The concert has become the most requested Soundgarden show to be released of all-time. The 29 song, nearly two-and-a-half-hour show encompasses the band’s entire legacy of songs, from their early years with “Hunted Down” through their monumental albums Badmotorfinger and Superunknown respectively with “Outshined” and “Black Hole Sun,” and nearly every song from King Animal including “By Crooked Steps” and “Been Away Too Long.” The concert film features 21 songs never released on a concert film, 17 of which have never been released on a concert album, including “Blind Dogs” which is the first-time the band ever performed the song live.
"Twister" is the second studio LP from the acclaimed New Zealand quintet LEISURE. Produced by the band themselves, the album continues their free form exploration into catchy pop psychedelia, smooth electro-funk and big room modern soul music, all wrapped in shimmering sun-kissed soulful vocals.
School of Language is David Brewis, who also makes music with his brother Peter as Field Music. This is the third School of Language album, following on from Sea From Shore in 2008 and Old Fears in 2014.
This is an album about Donald Trump - his dubious rise in politics, his capricious behaviour while in office and the motley cast of characters he has surrounded himself with.
It’s not exactly a protest record, though it is shot through with anger. It’s definitely not a joke, though some of it is darkly funny. It is a tragedy and it is a farce. The songs are sung from different points of view, almost as if it’s a Donald Trump funk musical. One advisor sells Trump on the idea of a border wall. Another one feels he can’t quit because of the chaos that might follow. Rex Tillerson fumes at his plummeting status. Psychiatrists fret about the President’s mental stability. Hillary Clinton laments her loss. Trump himself brags and equivocates in his own unique, blustering style.
45 was written and recorded in a little less than two months during gaps in the schedule at Field Music’s studio in Sunderland. It was inspired by Bob Woodward’s book Fear, articles in the Washington Post, The New Yorker and The New York Times and by Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight. It was also inspired by James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, The Meters, Otis Redding and Free.
Stranger Things: Soundtrack from the Netflix Original Series, Season 3 will feature 15 classic tracks on 2 LP's and the debut of an original cast recording, featured on the 7" bonus single.
“There are two ways things can fall,” says Dude York’s Claire England. “They can fall and be ruined, or they can fall gently like a feather and be fine.” On Falling, their second full-length for Hardly Art, the Seattle trio explores that sentiment—evoked by the broken cake on the album cover and the soft confetti on the inside sleeve—through impossibly catchy and emotive songs that investigate the ways you can fall in and out of relationships, and sometimes fall back together. Recorded at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco with producer Patrick Brown, Falling finds Dude York sounding bigger and more fully-realized than ever with hits that would feel perfectly at home sandwiched between Jimmy Eat World and Third Eye Blind in early 2000s alt-rock radio rotation, while somehow still sounding utterly their own. Peter Richards (guitar) and England (bass) share equal songwriting and lead vocal duties on this record, a significant change from their previous album, 2017’s Sincerely, on which England fronted only two songs. The duality of their songwriting and vocals compliment each other emotionally and sonically, with Andrew Hall’s harmonies and driving drums providing their own unique character in each song. The collaboration is clear—each part is carefully crafted, with Richards’ guitar adding texture to the verses and then soaring into the particularly special kind of guitar solos that make you want to sing along. The production on Falling is full of meticulous details and sonic tricks designed to hit that deep teenage place in your heart, whether it’s the dense, chugging guitars or impeccably-placed harmonies. “We all have very different reference points for music and then when we swap them in becomes something totally different,” says Richards. He didn’t grow up as attached to the radio-friendly emo music that defined the adolescence of the rest of the band, but when he got into the genre in the past few years decided he wanted to embrace it in his songwriting, which comes across in the heavy guitars and dramatic arrangements that shine. Ultimately, the relationship Dude York is really investigating and playing around with is their relationship to music. By playing with tropes of romantic relationships, Dude York created a record that feels like a love letter to the alternative radio of yesteryear while managing to stay uniquely singular.
Like the outlaw he defines himself as, Chris Gantry doesnt really fit into any of the classic country singer identities and 50-plus years since he wrote his first and biggest hit, hes still writing and singing, having lived to tell the tale of his serpentine but ultimately joyful path, a Life Well Lived. Now in his mid-70s, Gantry is still a consummate performer and an inveterate writer; in performance he is a lusty, genial man, grateful to have drunk of his experiences, transcendent and ebullient in the moment of singing it. Recorded in Nashville with the legendary engineer Rob Galbraith, Nashlantis features 11 mesmerizing Gantry performances (a séance with the Human Spirit as the producer puts it) forming a reflection on his long and winding path through this world but the vitality of the songwriting allows the music to rise above simple elegy or denouement, providing a testament to the career and talent of Chris Gantry the individualism that set him apart from his earliest days and his enduringly openhearted embrace of today.
Oh Hiroshima have been working four long years on their third studio album – four intense years that blossomed into Oscillation. In 2019 the Swedes` tools are still abstract guitar work, dreamlike vocals and a hint of Electronica, and this time around none other than Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna) delivered the final layer in shape of mastering duties. The seven new soundscapes receive their dynamics from soaring guitars and rather dense song structures (quite unusual in terms of post rock): The result is an album like a beautiful fever dream that holds the listener enthralled for a long, long time.

NF's fourth full-length album: The Search, produced by Tommee Profitt, features hiphop, pop and cinematic elements, of which are evident in tracks such as 'When I Grow Up,' 'Returns,' title track 'The Search,' and lead single 'Time.' The album follows the 2017 release, Perception, which took the industry by surprise when fans propelled it to #1 on the Billboard 200 upon release. More than 40 years after first penning the award-winning bluegrass classic, "Steel Rails,' songwriter Louisa Branscomb is releasing a new interpretation of the song. Co-produced by Branscomb and fellow Compass award-winner Missy Raines, the song will appear on Branscomb's twelfth album, GONNA LOVE ANYWAY. The collection features a phenomenal group of singers and instrumentalists all performing their versions of Branscomb's songs, including Tina Adair, Dale Ann Bradley, Alison Brown, Becky Buller, Stuart Duncan, Jenni Lyn Gardner, Steve Gulley, Sierra Hull, Kimber Ludiker, Bryan McDowell, Missy Raines, Molly Tuttle, Jeanette Williams, and Celia Woodsmith, as well as Branscomb herself. Co-producer Missy Raines explains, "We took a designer approach to thinking of who we felt best matched each song.' Thus listeners find singer Dave Peterson powering out a Monroe-style bluegrass traditional ("Blue Moon Blues'), veteran Claire Lynch on the plaintive, elegant "Freight Train for a Song,' and new sensation Molly Tuttle on the poignant gem of the album, "Gonna Love Anyway.'
Delbert McClinton is a legend among Texas roots music aficionados, not only for his amazing longevity, but for his ability to combine country, blues, soul, and rock & roll as if there were no distinctions between them. A formidable harmonica player long before he recorded as a singer, McClinton performed with legends like Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reid, and more. McClinton's career began in the late '50s, yet it took him nearly two decades to evolve into a bona fide solo artist. In 1978, Emmylou Harris took his "Two More Bottles of Wine" all the way to the top of the country charts. Over the next years, McClinton placed material with stars like Wynonna, Vince Gill, Lee Roy Parnell, and Martina McBride among others. He has guest appearances with Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, BB King, Mavis Staples, and more.
Having broken a decade's silence with 2016's 'System', LA-based electronic musician Joseph Fraioli, a.k.a. Datachi, returns this summer with his eighth album 'Bones'. Released on Venetian Snares' Timesig imprint, 'Bones' features 12 tracks of mind expanding electronica, once again recorded on his custom-built Eurorack modular system. Much like its predecessor, 'Bones' manages to make the most of the possibilities modular systems offer, whilst avoiding their many pitfalls that can often turn such music into little more than a dry academic exercise. Indeed 'Bones' is a remarkably intimate album, written and recorded in the time following his father's death, and reflects this intense period of personal change in Joseph's life. Creating this music was a therapy of sorts, Joseph recalls. It was almost like a close friend being there for me, and it's something that I hope others can perhaps utilize in the same way.Ranging from blissful ambience and guileless, starry eyed melodies, to intricate claustrophobic rhythms that forever sound close to collapsing in on themselves before expanding into bold new patterns, 'Bones' is the work of a producer who, twenty years on from his debut, continues to push the boundaries of electronic music.
Privatized prisons enforce police states, where nonviolent offenders languish for decades. Pharmaceuticals numb the mind. Social media distracts the spirit. All while the very planet lurches toward an inevitable climate disaster that will extinguish humanity. Against this backdrop of postmodern dystopia, chaos, and confusion, arrives “Human Target”, the earth-scorching fifth album from extreme metal titans THY ART IS MURDER. Australia’s most brutally alarming cultural export since George Miller’s Mad Max franchise makes music that serves as a loud last gasp against the ever-encroaching void. It’s a blazing light of nihilistic despondency before the final darkness. Fusing authentic crushing death metal with blackened fury and flashes of knuckle-dragging stomp, THY ART IS MURDER exorcise the pangs of mortality and the pains of socio-political trauma. THY ART IS MURDER’s thinking-person’s blackened death metal has challenged and inspired audiences around the globe, from top-tier genre festivals like Download, Graspop, Hellfest, and Summer Breeze; to high-profile tours supporting KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, PARKWAY DRIVE, and ARCHITECTS; to multiple headlining and co-headlining shows. In their native country, they’ve charted higher than any other homegrown extreme metal band. They even toured North America with SLAYER as part of Rockstar Mayhem.

New York's B Boys (Andrew Kerr, Brendon Avalos, Britton Walker) find inspiration in the chaos that surrounds them: the aggressive attitude and sonic lawlessness of the city they live, work, and breathe in every day. Their raw, yet meticulous style is characterized by rhythmic complexity, commanding riffs, and introspective lyrics that are as playful and self-aware as they are cutting. Across two acclaimed releases on Captured Tracks-2016's No Worry No Mind EP and 2017's debut full-length Dada-B Boys explore solitude and self-reflection through sharp, high-energy shouts and melodic mediations. Now, the sprightly sarcasm and acerbic commentary continues on the band's highly anticipated sophomore LP, Dudu. Recorded by Gabe Wax (Deerhunter, Ought, Crumb) and mixed by Andy Chugg (Pill, Pop. 1280, Bambara) at Outlier Inn, to be released on July 26, 2019. B Boys have toured the U.S. and Europe extensively, supporting acts such as Parquet Courts, Merchandise, Shame, Sunflower Bean, and Oh Sees. Influenced by The Clash, Wire, and Talking Heads, Dudu finds B Boys picking up where they left off, pondering quotidien grievances while examining the bigger picture. On tracks like "Cognitive Dissonance" and "Automation, " subtle tensions meet agonizing pressure that softly build, then explode. "I Want, " featuring Pill's Veronica Torres, is a bright, feel-good critique of capitalism and greed. There's a lot of noise in the world, but what are we actually saying? On Dudu, B Boys take time to laugh, scream and chant their way through the absurdity of it all.
Mac Powell grew up in a small town in Alabama. His love for music began at an early age as both of his parents would sing and play guitar around the house. Mac soon began to sing in the local country church by day, and listen to his Dad's record collection by night. When Mac was a sophomore in high school, he moved to Atlanta, GA where his passion for music and faith found an outlet in the band THIRD DAY. Over the past 25 years THIRD DAY has helped transform Christian music and built a devoted fan base while traveling the world many times over, selling 10 million albums, earning 4 Grammy awards, 1 American Music Award, 24 Dove Awards, and by being inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The Family Reunion is a band that has developed over the past several years from the musical brothers" that have been recording and playing live with Mac in support of his first 2 independent solo projects. The songs on Back Again are foot stomping', hand clappin' Southern roots country songs that clearly pay tribute to the early musical inspirations from his childhood.
When “Sugar Ray’s” breakthrough hit song “Fly” put them on the map in 1997, lead vocalist Mark McGrath was thrust into the public eye. It’s no doubt the band maintains its momentum due in no small part to the good looks, charisma and talent of its front man, Mark McGrath. McGrath first appeared with Sugar Ray (then known as the Shrinky Dinx) when he jumped on stage and grabbed the microphone. Two years later, in 1994, the band changed its name and landed a deal with Atlantic Records. Shortly after, in 1997, the band’s collaboration with reggae artist Super Cat resulted in the song “Fly,” which dominated the airwaves. Later that year, and following the success of their number-one hit, Sugar Ray released its second album, “Floored,” which went double-platinum. Sugar Ray’s success rocketed McGrath to pop-star status, as he graced the covers of “Rolling Stone” and “Spin.” He even made People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” issue, named “Sexiest Rocker” in 1998. After “Floored,” Sugar Ray released “14:59,” in reference to its fading “15 minutes of fame.” Ironically, the CD wound up outselling its predecessor, going triple-platinum with hit singles “Every Morning,” “Someday” and “Falls Apart.” Their success continued with the release of the self-titled album, “Sugar Ray,” which garnered the band it’s first-ever top-10 album. The band has appeared numerous times on the Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, Carson Daly, and The Today Show's Summer Concert Series to name a few. In addition, McGrath has made guest appearances on the hit television dramas “Las Vegas”, “North Shore”, The Neighbors, The Office, Law and Order SVU and The Drew Carey Show to name a few. He has been featured on a number of MTV and VH1 programs, including the “Teen Choice Awards,” “My VH1 Music Awards,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Jeopardy,” the “American Music Awards” and the “ESPY Awards.” McGrath has hosted VH1’s “I Love the 80’s” and “The Greatest: 100 Most Shocking Moments in Rock and Roll,” and the primetime specials “The World Music Awards” and “Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show”, as well as Extra, Don’t Forget the Lyrics and Killer Karaoke on the Tru Network. He also appeared with Sugar Ray in the 2002 feature film “Scooby-Doo.” And has gone on to co-star in last summers Si-Fy thriller Sharknado 2. Sugar Ray continues delivering the hits live and with the Summerland tour which combines great bands from the 90's and their top 10 hits, a big hit. Sugar Ray has a robust schedule of live dates scheduled and look forward to seeing everyone out on the road. “This is my life’s work,” he notes. “People say, ‘You’re still in the band?’ This is what I do! I’m gonna be in Sugar Ray till I die! I’ve been lucky enough to fit a uniform, I’m gonna wear it till the wheels fall off!”
