“On Monday 15th January this year Dolores O’Riordan died in London. Two days later she was due to come into BMG and play us the song demos for a new Cranberries album. At this point none of us believed there would be another studio album from the band.
A couple of months later the remaining band members (Noel, Fergal & Mike) listened through to the vocals with producer Stephen Street and with the full support of Dolores’s family the decision was taken to take the vocal tracks and for the band to complete the recording of the album. This was a direct reaction to the strength of the material Dolores had left as her legacy.
The end result is a euphoric alternative rock album on a par with the band’s best work, and together with the striking album artwork (by original band photographer Andy Earl and original sleeve designer Cally Calloman), celebrates vitality and optimism albeit tinged with tremendous poignancy.”

Josh Ritter is returning this year with a new full-length, his tenth studio LP and follow-up to 2017’s Gathering. The Americana songwriter’s latest album, Fever Breaks, spans 10 tracks recorded at Nashville’s RCA Studio A over the second half of the past year. Jason Isbell produced the effort, which features his band The 400 Unit playing backup. It’s an exciting confluence of talents, and the promised chemistry bears out on the album’s gritty lead single “Old Black Magic”.

The Mountain Goats are John Darnielle, Peter Hughes, Jon Wurster, and Matt Douglas. They have been making music together as a quartet for several years. Three of them live in North Carolina and one has moved back to Rochester. Their songs often seek out dark lairs within which terrible monsters dwell, but their mission is to retrieve the treasure from the dark lair & persuade the terrible monsters inside to seek out the path of redemption. As Axl Rose once memorably asked, in the song “Terrible Monster”: “what’s so terrible about monsters, anyway?” This is the question The Mountain Goats have been doggedly pursuing since 1991. They will never leave off this quest until every option has been exhausted. Thank you.

Seeing Other People is curiously positioned as Foxygen's most recent last-ever album. With every album the band dies; with every album the band is reborn. But unlike the last-ever Foxygen albums before it, this one seems to have a self-effacing bittersweetness to it that signifies some sort of passing; some sort of white flag. But it SOUNDS in no way like a band giving up. It has experiments in tone and genre the likes of which we've not heard on a Foxygen record since... Starpower?; since 21st Century?; since Take the Kids? You don't need our hot take on this thing.
Appropriately enough for a band named NEW YEARS DAY, their stunning new "Unbreakable" album signifies a new outlook-as well as a high-water mark for the Cali-bred lineup. Yet it was a rocky road to "Unbreakable", as singer Ash Costello explains: "If I had to look at my life like a timeline of colors, when I wrote our last album, 'Malevolence' (2015), it was pitch, charcoal black. But in the last couple years, the band cut off toxic people, built a new business team, and we're stronger than we've ever been. So when we went to make 'Unbreakable', I wanted the process to be fun, to reflect our renewed vibe and energy," she says. "We set out to write the poppiest metal album, or the most metal pop album."On "Unbreakable", that mission is accomplished. It's a dozen intense, boundary-melding songs that may touch on metal or goth, but are ultimately undeniable modern rock 'n' roll tunes, no-holds-barred, done the NEW YEARS DAY way. The public got its first taste of "Unbreakable" in November 2018, with the booming, ultra-dynamic "Skeletons." The song surpassed 1 million worldwide streams, the first proof that "Unbreakable" was going to be unbeatable. It's an album that captures a young band in its creative prime, and a singer solidly in charge of her vision. The album was produced by Mitch Marlow (All That Remains, In This Moment) and Scott Stevens (Halestorm, Shinedown) and showcases a NEW YEARS DAY stripped bare-literally. The "boys in the band" left behind their white face makeup, which all admit was somewhat of a "safety blanket." Likewise, Costello stripped down her songwriting. "I used to think lyrics needed to have metaphorical veils and be super-dense and paint a picture but leave it up to the interpretation." But for "Unbreakable", she says with characteristic forthrightness: "I was, 'fuck that, I'm literally going to say exactly what I want to say."With the upcoming release and the solid new line-up the members of NEW YEARS DAY finally feel "Unbreakable."
So That You Might Hear Me is the third album from UK duo Bear's Den and its debut release on US label Rounder Records. The album was recorded in Seattle with Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes) and mixed by Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Kassabian). Bear's Den consists of multi-instrumentalist Kev Jones and Ivor Novello-nominated songwriter Andrew Davie, who have spent the first five years as a band touring tirelessly around the world. Stepping into their next chapter, So That You Might Hear Me is the band's most ambitious record to date.
The last twelve months have seen Fontaines D.C. release four hotly received double A-side singles, all of which were named as singles of the week by Rough Trade, and garnered early support from the likes of KEXP, Steve Lamacq and others on BBC 6 Music, as well as earning feature space from every major Irish and UK publication. Now the Dublin band return with their debut record, Dogrel. On the short and punchy opening track, "Big," frontman Grian sings "My childhood was small, but I'm gonna be big", and that, they certainly will be. Dogrel is a debut which is best enjoyed as a whole; it is very much in the grand tradition of the album as art form, just as this is a band very much in the classic band mold: great singles, an indefatigable work ethic and an utter aversion to standing still.

Droneflower is in bloom. The new collaboration between Marissa Nadler and Stephen Brodsky (Cave In, Mutoid Man), is a sprawling and expansive exercise in contrasts. It is the sound of the war between the brutal and the ethereal, the dark and the light, the past and the present, and the real and imagined. Brodsky met Nadler for the first time in 2014 at Brooklyn's Saint Vitus Bar when he came to see her play on her July tour, and they quickly became friends. Both of them had been wanting to explore songwriting that didn't fit into their existing projects, and they soon became energized by the prospect of working together. One of the first ideas they discussed was a horror movie soundtrack, and while Droneflower isn't that, it is a richly cinematic album. It's easy to imagine much of the record set to images, though it wasn't composed that way.

BAILEN’s musicality springs from a very deep well, in fact, it’s in their DNA. Raised in New York City by their classically trained parents, siblings Daniel, David and Julia Bailen (fraternal twins and younger sister, respectively) immersed themselves in a record collection that included Simon & Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Carole King and The Band. Produced by GRAMMY-Award winner John Congleton (St. Vincent, The War on Drugs) the transcendent harmonies, striking arrangements and meticulous songcraft of BAILEN’s debut album, Thrilled To Be Here, are rooted in the young group’s unusual self-assurance, preternatural insight and potent lyrical bite.
George Benson gets back to Americana basics on Walking to New Orleans, the jazz guitar legend's double-barreled tribute to both piano-pounding hit machine Fats Domino and the original rock guitar hero and poet, Chuck Berry. Walking To New Orleans is out on April 26, 2019 on Mascot Label Group/Provogue Records. The album toggles between tracks written and/or recorded by Berry and Domino as though Benson were moderating a musical conversation between Missouri and Louisiana. It kicks off with a rock-solid rendition of Berry's 1964 post-incarceration story song "Nadine (Is It You?)," which Benson makes his own by scatting in unison with his guitar solo. Then a horn section pumps up Fats's 1951 R&B hit "Rockin' Chair" and his first R&B-pop crossover smash, "Ain't That a Shame," from 1955, with Benson's guitar standing in swingingly for the originals' sax solos. The Chuck Berry songbook is also represented on Walking to New Orleans by the good-timey "You Can't Catch Me," the sinuous "Havana Moon," the rollicking "Memphis, Tennessee," and the bluesy "How You've Changed." Fats Domino weighs in with the rollicking "I Hear You Knocking," "Blue Monday," and the album's iconic title track.
Produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and Reigning Sound frontman Greg Cartwright, Abdication... For Your Love was originally available solely as a promotional giveaway. This 2019 reissue marks the first wide release of the record. In a 2011 review of the album, the A.V. Club wrote, "Reigning Sound's allegiance is to producing great songs that move feet and rip out hearts, not to any particular scene or fashionable pose." Paste also described it as a collection of "nicely recorded songs that sometimes rock, sometimes don't, but are always well put together."

Cleveland, Ohio quintet NINE SHRINES arose on the scene in 2014 from the ashes of aggressive 00’s Ohio band pedigree: drummer Andrew Wetzel (Attack Attack!), bassist Devon Voisine and lead guitarist Andrew Baylis, (Life on Repeat), rhythm guitarist Even McKeever (Downplay), and singer Chris Parketny (Strangers to Wolves). Nine Shrines grew from their previous efforts to build something powerful. Their new album, Retribution Therapy, sees a band truly coming into their own. Nine Shrines blend the most extreme elements of active-rock/metal-core with well-crafted, melodic songwriting. Sharing the stage with Volbeat, Halestorm, Chimaira, Shinedown, All That Remains, and Nonpoint made waves nationwide. It’s all given rise to the intensity of Retribution Therapy. Retribution Therapy was produced by Dan Korneff (My Chemical Romance,I Prevail, Pierce The Veil, All that Remains, Papa Roach).
“We set out to write a record about life, and it ended up being about death,” says Lord Dying guitarist/vocalist Erik Olson about the band’s third studio album Mysterium Tremendum. While the new record centers around death (and you bet your ass it’s a double-LP concept album), it focuses more on what awaits us on the other side (while also exploring our culture’s fear of dying, and the struggles with our own mortality). The ideas for the concept have been kicking around for some time, but it’s fitting that they’re only nowcoming to fruition. At the core of these Portland, Oregon, heavy metal titans is Olsonand guitarist Chris Evans, who’ve been making music together since fifth grade. They formed Lord Dying before they had a name or a record when another Portland powerhouse Red Fang beckoned them to open some shows for them in 2010. Two records and countless live performances—including tours with Voivod and Crowbar—followed. Mysterium Tremendum is the record Olson and Evans have wanted to make since the band’s inception. It’s easily Lord Dying’s most musically diverse album, but one that could only be made following the band’s jackhammer 2013 debut Summon the Faithless, and 2015’s brooding Poisoned Altars. “It’s more along the lines of what we wanted to do early on,” says Evans.
