Central Square Records

Meet a diverse group of characters from a dozen places and times. Included are a deranged postal worker, Joan of Arc, a recidivist, the grave digger from Hamlet, a love addict, a quirky family, a Fool on the Hill, a prisoner in Guantanamo, an interplanetary couple, and a Gypsy woman. Character sketches start with Pollard's poetic storytelling and memorable melodies. Songs about and/or narrated by these characters become animated with remarkable musicianship. Toshio Mana on bass and Chaim Tolwin on drums join John on guitar to get the groove going. Gabriel Aldort evokes a rainbow of colors from the keyboards and David Acker paints broad strokes with a mean lead guitar. Joe Deninzon of Stratospheerius layers on details with acoustic and electric violin. Mike McGinnis and Jeff Hermanson of Monster Horns add breathy tones with sax, trumpet, and flute. Master percussionist Frank Colon splashes on his unfailing rhythm. Steve Sandberg fleshes out Guantanamo, playing keys and producing the song. Isabella Rose, Mary Edwards and Jonnathan Peralta's vocal colorings complete the portraits. Character, John Raymond Pollard's fifth album, was recorded in New York City and Rio de Janeiro. Chinese and Japanese characters for "character" are incorporated in cover art.
