Every year, about the time that the temperature climbs up toward 90, the rap industry coughs up a perfect summer soundtrack single. Ludacris' "Area Codes," 50 Cent's "21 Questions," Snoop Dogg's "Wonderful," Nelly's "Hot in Herre"-each combined a killer hook, laid back lyrical brilliance, and a bumpin' beat. This year, Miami-based Cuban-American rapper Pitbull throws his hat into the ring with "Culo."A collaboration between Pitbull and Lil Jon, the track mixes crunk with plenty of Latino flavor. It's about Mami, a hottie with "thighs like J-Lo"; when Pit's not attempting to seduce her with his sultry Spanish, he's delivering juicy asides like "I'll be wearin' her out and when I'm finished/ Paramedics gon' be carryin' her out, man." Nearly all 16 tracks on M.I.A.M.I., Pitbull's first album for TVT, explore similar topics (willing women, fast cars, and endless amounts of Cristal) but not one measures up to the gloriously raw "Culo." Though "Get on the Floor" nearly succeeds, "She's Freaky" and "Shake It Up" sound like mere filler in comparison.
Pundits have recently begun to mutter about sexual harassment issues and double standards within the rap industry. But Pitbull is just the voice of the status quo, singing about a subject as old as humankind itself. Based on the strength of one hit single, M.I.A.M.I. is sure to go platinum.
